Feb 8/9 Fri/Sat CARNEGIE HILL Brushes Off Mega Snowstorm

Residents Face Streets, Sidewalks Cleared by Crack of Dawn Times Found on Doorstep! 7 am Sat: According to the New York Times on the Internet read just after the crack of dawn, the Manhattan we trekked and sloshed and slipped through from 4pm to 8pm yesterday is paralyzed, buried under 14 inches of brilliant white snow, with everybody relatively sane in the City of Materialistic Dreams hunkered down for the day with hot cocoa unable to budge. Given the superslippery ice-y melt sludge that forced us yesterday to move no faster than one mph down the sidewalks of Broadway under a new brolly ($10 from Tamara at Duane Reade) to keep off the driving snowflakes pelting down, and the six inch deep puddles off the kerb we were forced to step into to get onto the equally slowmoving monster NYC buses on our way home, we could believe it. You can't stop (rich) New York But whaddaya know?! Trotting down the stairs to check out the scene and record the pristine blanket covering the parked cars under their mounds and blocking impassable streets and sidewalks, we felt 99% sure that our personal Times delivery superman, who had persevered amazingly during Sandy and got our Times through to us even at the height of that megastorm, must have failed, finally, to place today's Saturday edition inside the doorway. Instead, we found to our amazement that there was the Times wrapped in plastic on the floor inside the door, and outside, Superman's footprints on the steps, a recently ploughed and passable street, a sidewalk shoveled and a motor snow machine blowing a clear path around the tall building on the corner. Once again, the privileged denizens of this hilltop locale prove impervious to the worst Mother Nature can hurl at them, while the inhabitants of Far Rockaway a few miles away freeze in misery again. The Mayor's Press release yesterday: MAYOR BLOOMBERG ISSUES SEVERE WEATHER ADVISORY At the direction of the Mayor, the public is hereby advised that significant snowfall has been forecast starting tomorrow afternoon through Saturday morning. The public is urged to avoid all unnecessary driving during the duration of the storm and, until further directed, to use public transportation wherever possible. As New Yorkers are making their commuting plans for tomorrow, they should be aware that driving conditions will be difficult. If you must drive, use extreme caution. The MTA has advised of potential service disruptions, and information about any service changes to public transportation is available on the MTA website at http://www.mta.info/. Any vehicle found to be blocking roadways or impeding the ability to plow streets shall be subject to towing at the owner’s expense. Alternate side parking is suspended citywide through Sunday. Due to anticipated high winds the Staten Island Ferry will be operating on a modified schedule beginning tomorrow afternoon. The Emergency Management, Fire, Police, Sanitation, and Transportation Commissioners will be taking all appropriate and necessary steps to preserve public safety and to render all required and available assistance to protect the security, well-being and health of the residents of the City. City government and public schools are open tomorrow. Afterschool programs are subject to cancellation. Due to potential power outages and transportation difficulties, New Yorkers are advised to stock up on potential supplies, including medicine.
