Polish star Basia pounds upbeat Latin dance songs at BBKings
There are few audiences as warm blooded as the fans of Basia Trzetrzelewska, 57, one of the handful of Polish nationals to achieve international stardom on the live music stage in the past twenty years (another is the excellent jazz trumpeter Tomasz Stanko). Her special brand of upbeat love songs with their powerful Latin beats and pleasing harmonies reliably packs the house in smaller venues in New York, attracting a now middle aged audience of muscular men and attractive women that have been her fervid fans since they first heard her vibrant voice on her platinum CD "Time and Tide" in the late eighties.
Last night at BBKing's she took the stage with her small band including Danny White, her keyboardist and fellow composer, a trumpeter, a saxophonist, a guitarist, a drummer and two female backup singers from Mauritius and rocked the house with one And a half hours of unremitting samba beat that left her admirers in a blissful state of mixed satiation and desire that many probably had to get back to their bedrooms to work off entirely.
As Ray, a broad shouldered enthusiast accompanied by his tall, supple girlfriend Robin, with whom he had been dancing at the bar as Basia's performance crescendoed, told us, "No one stirs me up like Basia!"
