HOW IT TURNED OUT
This was more than a concert, it was a presentantion on the IACE Italian Culture and Language Program in a small Italian town in Umbria, Narnia, during the “Week of Italian Language” promotion. Giovanni Desantis, Attache for Cultural Affairs at the Italian Consulate next door on Park Avenue and 68/69 Street (West side) introduced speakers including two young American student young women who read out their appreciation of their time in Italy (Who in the US would accept 20 people into their home without hesitation?) Then Cristiana in her capacity as President of the Narnia Arts Academy in Terni, Italy spoke about their program in music, pottery and dance, and introduced a video showing the familiar medieval architecture of an old Italian small town of no great resources. Then Cristiana sat dowm at the piano and played four pieces and an encore. And what an extraordinary performance it was! All the warm Mediterranean sun of her country seemed to imbue her playing with the emotional sustenance and power she draws from her Unbrian roots combined with strong fingers and perfect control even over the piano with its less than perfectly responsive keys to produce a passionate warmth and fluency which rendered Rossini and Verdi and her own composition both exciting and musically perceptive but above all fresh andn impetuous sounding performance. The after party was furnished with prosciutto and other delectables which the government budget of the Institute no longer runs to. Camera pics though unfortunately with unreliable flash, but some good one.
She will be playing November 20 Thursday at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall to raise funds (Seats $100,75,50)
