Oct 2 Tues Annabella Gonzalez Dance, Wine Tasting, and Auction Reception
Annabella Gonzalez had a reception for friends and supporters of her independent dance company, with several demonstrations of ongoing choreography currently being created, at Moore Brothers on Tuesday Oct 2nd (33 East 20 St).
In the upstairs space atop the extensive wine stock of the carefully hunted down and selected kind that the Philadelphia headquartered concern imports, the lead dancers of the Latin inflected company (Ms Gonzalez was born in Mexico City) ran through three dances both solo and for quartet, while board members and other guests watched with glasses in their hands from six bottles to taste from small European vineyards, such as Vins de Pays de l'Herault Fruit Defendu Domaine Magellan 2011, from a collection of Mediterranean vineyards in the Languedoc region taken over more than a decade ago, this one from a special plot of 60 year old Cinsault bought from Chateaneuf-du-Pape.
Whether influenced by the medium bodied, lively red Le Fruit Defendu or the other young wines of interest sampled, the dances were received with warm approval and after a speech by Annabella expressing her love and encouragement both for the dancers and for comments by the assemblage on the direction of the choreography, guests chatted over hors d'oevres served up by volunteers Beatrice Cordero and Agnieska Stypul from Gdansk, who has written reviews for Nowy Djinnik, the Polish weekly.
Among the guests on the board of the company were the young French banker and wine connoisseur Vincent Samat and with him, the Sloane Kettering physical therapist Mary Ann Herklotz who works to exercise and encourage the critically ill, Wanda Ruggiera a law firm administrator who danced with Annabella herself in earlier times, real estate magnate Sidney Joyner and his wife pediatrician Kim Joyner, lawyer Claude Scales who used to work with Richard, Annabella's husband, in the same legendary law firm, LeBoeuf, Lamb, Greene & MacRae LLP, which finally, long after they had left, notoriously imploded last year from taking on too many putative partners and borrowing too much to finance the expansion which was essentially defeated by the 2008 crash, and who now writes the Self-Absorbed Boomer blog in Brooklyn.
Among the dancers that performed were Marcos Dejesus (stretching in the first video), Juan Echazarreta (in the green knit costume) and the lively Lucia Campoy, who brought her father Christophe Campoy and mother Velia Clavico, and who when told she had an "inspiring spirit" said "You are very kind." Also present was the painter Louis Romero who is a guard at the Met and who brought along and set on an easel an exquisite copy of one of its most ravishing portraits.
At the end of the early evening celebration the pretty and appealing Mexican handicrafts - bracelets, inlaid boxes, a striking doll - placed in written auction at the end of the hall sold out.
