Sep 19 Thu 2013 DEMOS: Common Credo: The Path Back to American Success (WW Norton), John E. Schwarz

Restoration of lost values key to a better future, writes Demos fellow But would his economic prescriptions save the day? The small but well connected think tank Demos is one of the last places where the values of the last century still survive and liberal is not a dirty word, but a proud banner. One of their most thoughtful fellows is John Schwarz of the University of Arizona (jes@u.Arizona.edu 520-882-9847) who has written a book, In Common Credo, which maps the deplorable state of the US economy and society as it hurtles towards a Marxian divide between haves and have nots and suggests a way forward might be found by reclaiming the values of the past where red and blue, rich and poor were all members of the same system of political amd social morality. Going beyond that, Schwarz suggests some practical measures which might help this return to firm ground, though whether his scheme would work in practical terms is a matter for more careful readers of his rather labored book to decide. ========================================================================================= [caption id="attachment_402" align="alignnone" width="256"] David Callahan of demos keeps tabs on the welfare of the downtrodden[/caption]Please join Demos to discuss a daring political and economic plan to restore American unity and prosperity. Today, bitter partisanship has sunk our politics into unending stalemate, millions of Americans are struggling to get ahead financially, and cynicism about the fairness of our political system grows continually deeper. [caption id="attachment_404" align="alignnone" width="256"] John E. Schwarz would like to suggest a way out of the current malaise which does not involve sacrificing the poor and weak to the near-bursting fat cats of Wall Street[/caption]In Common Credo: The Path Back to American Success (WW Norton), John E. Schwarz, acclaimed author and Demos Distinguished Senior Fellow, charts a highly original path out of America’s political and economic morass, one that both liberals and conservatives can rally around. Schwarz and Demos co-founder David Callahan will discuss Schwarz’ new book, the country’s challenges, and how a false idea of freedom is eviscerating our economy and undermining our politics. Light refreshments will be served. 6 pm Sep 19 Thu Location: 220 5th Avenue, 5th Floor, New York, NY 10001 ====================================================== AL signed up on Web via email Sep 4 Wed - Demos is an excellent little think tank that monitors the welfare of the hapless poor and weak as the engine of unrestrained 21C capitalism steamrollers them into poverty and oblivion.
